It Began With a Personal Question.
As I entered my 60s and began preparing to step away from full-time medical practice, I found myself asking the same questions many of my patients were asking: What will the next decade look like? Will I stay strong enough to ski, cycle, play tennis, and take long walks? Or will I face the same heart disease, cancer, or dementia that affected my parents?
I had always been reasonably healthy—physically active, fit, and mindful about my diet—but I realized that good habits alone were not a strategy. I wanted a deliberate, evidence-based plan to protect and improve my health for the years ahead.
The Missing Piece in Traditional Care.
As I began studying longevity and lifestyle medicine for myself, I discovered something surprising: much of what I was learning had never been part of my formal medical training. Few physicians were deeply focused on preserving health in already well individuals. Most of medicine is built to treat disease—not to proactively extend healthspan.
I knew there were others like me—people in good health who wanted rigorously researched guidance, thoughtful medical oversight, and a structured approach to staying strong and independent for as long as possible.
So I committed to educating myself in this field—first for my own well-being, and then to offer that knowledge to others. That decision led to the creation of HealthSpan.
My training in the area of longevity medicine is intensive, active and ongoing, and to date has included formal coursework and extensive examination of the medical literature. Among my other continuing work to gain expertise in this field, later this year I expect to complete additional Board Certification through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
